  2. Comparing an Underground Hidden Dog Fence with GPS Wireless Fences

August 28, 2023 | Categories: Palmetto Dog Watch Blog

When it comes to your dog’s safety, you want only the best for them. With how much energy a dog can have, it’s important to let them have time outside to burn that energy and have plenty of enrichment. The last thing you want, though, is for your dog to leave the safety of your yard and run off. To prevent this, a wireless dog fence is a popular option for pet owners, as it provides the limitations of a fence without having to build a physical one.

One option that many pet owners choose is a GPS wireless fence. This type of fence will use satellites to scope out a specific range and create a boundary. The GPS program can then send alerts directly to your dog’s collar whenever they get too close to the boundary, and correct them if they don’t move away from it.

GPS fences, however, have their drawbacks. There are potential safety risks and unnecessary inconveniences which come with setting one up that you may want to avoid. For a better understanding of the downsides, we’ve put together a list of the cons, along with comparisons to our hidden dog fence as an improved alternative.

Restrictive Set Ups

With a GPS system, the setup of a wireless dog fence can be limited. Since it is mapped out through satellites, the exact boundary line can vary in unpredictable ways, making it hard to use for smaller properties or uneven terrain. The mapped out areas will not always account for roads, wooded areas, and other hazards, which could lead to your dog being able to reach points you don’t want them to. In order to fix this, you may have to move the entire boundary, which isn’t always an option if you have limited space to accommodate it.

DogWatch’s Hidden Fence, however, is a hidden dog fence that doesn’t rely on a GPS connection. Instead, an underground wire connects to a transmitter, which sends out a radio signal. Your pet’s collar picks up this signal and will be alerted and corrected when they attempt to test their boundaries. Small areas and uneven ground pose little issue, since our team customizes the area to your liking.

Limited Battery Life

The battery life of the programmed collar is crucial to maintaining your dog’s safety. With many GPS wireless collars, the battery is either rechargeable with a weak life cycle, or a more standard version that has a short lifespan. Batteries like these are unreliable, given that they can die out quickly, and increase the chances of your dog getting out before a recharge or replacement.

For our hidden dog fence, our batteries are built to last up to two years. The longevity significantly cuts the cost of maintaining your dog’s programmed collar. Other systems can cost up to $1k over the course of 10 years in battery replacement, while the cost of ours can be as low as $125! This reduces the risk of your dog’s collar losing power too quickly and your dog getting out.

Boundary Inconsistencies and Unreliability

A debilitating issue with the GPS wireless dog fence is the inconsistency of the boundaries you set. With the programming coming from satellites, you have the inconveniences of losing the signal or losing power. This can shift the boundaries you have set, or disrupt it entirely. If you are training your dog to learn the boundary, an unreliable system can detract from your training. The dog won’t learn where their limit is, and the inconsistencies may confuse them. What’s more inconvenient is GPS systems not having enough customer support, or the complete lack of it, making it hard to remedy these issues without paying for multiple solutions.

For guaranteed consistency, our Hidden Fence is the best pet fencing option. Given that it’s wired underground, it won’t lose service, and has a more reliable connection. It provides easier training for your dog, because the boundaries won’t change. Even if the wire was damaged or severed by a utility company or another issue, DogWatch provides reliable customer support and services to quickly get your fence back up and running, which can save you money on repetitive costs.
